South Africa Equity Markets | 07 Oct 2015: JSE All Share closes 0.95% higher, resource stocks gain 4.77%, gold mining loses 4.35%
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, Capital Markets in Africa —- On Wednesday, Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) All Share index ended 0.95 percent or 495.27 points higher to close at 52,565.42 points. The JSE Top 40 index also added 538.56 points or 1.16 percent to end at 47,162.94 points.
Looking at the sector indices, JSE financial sector index surged by 0.50 percent to end at 44,464.37 points. Both Industrial and industrial 25 sector indexes higher by 0.45 percent to close at 77,763.90 points and added 0.49 percent to settle at 69,950.70 points respectively. The resource index surged by 4.77 percent or 1,608.15 points to close at 35,345.34 points but the Gold mining sector index declined by 4.35 percent or 46.65 points with a closing level of 1,026.16 points.
From the market strength/breath (measured as ratio of gainers to losers), the market recorded 173 price ups, 174 price downs and 58 remained unchanged, hence market strength/breathe closed negative. Out of the top gainers was LONMIN PLC, whose shares gained 27.34 percent to close at ZAR 6.94 after investors exchanged 7,375,474 shares. Resource Generation Limited soared by 20.41 percent after traded 11,243 shares, boosting the share price to ZAR 1.18. Anglo American Plc also climbed by 11.31 percent to end at ZAR 137.47 after investors traded 10,818,128 shares. Bowler Metcalf Limited increased by 9.89 percent to end at ZAR 10.00 after exchanged a total of 46,369 shares. Glencore Xstrata Plc climbed by 9.58 percent to end at ZAR 25.96 after trading 18,756,921 shares.
On the losers’ table were Wescoal Holdings Limited whose shares declined to ZAR 1.22 after 759,745 shares were bought and sold, resulting in a fall of 9.63 percent. Telemaster Holdings Limited tumbled by 7.69 percent to close at ZAR 1.20, after 7,785 shares were traded. Sibanye Gold Limited plummeted by 5.67 percent to trade at ZAR 18.62 a share after investors bought and sold 2,133,478 shares. Nvest Financial Holdings Limited slumped by 5.66 percent to trade at ZAR 2.50 after 4,130 traded deals. After investors bought and sold 792,251 shares, Raubex Group Limited plunged by 5.58 percent to trade at ZAR 16.76.
On the currency markets front, the South rand was stronger against US dollar at ZAR 13.4293 by adding 0.76 percent and against British pound to trade at ZAR 20.5369 after gaining 0.30 percent. The rand appreciated by 0.99 percent against the Euro to close at ZAR 15.0996.
